Due to its good
location Verona had a strategic role during the Roman
Empire. Several important wars took place here (in 268
against the Germans, in 312 against Magencio and in 402
against Alarico). It was also a culture center. One of the
most famous Roman Poets, Gaius Valerius Catullus, was born in present-day Sirmione, not far from Verona.
