2.- Tossa de Mar, downtown

The most beautiful area in Tossa de Mar is the medieval neighborhood inside the old walls, 'Vila Vella'.

This picture was taken in front of the main gate. At the left you see part of the walls. At the right you see some of the tourist restaurants.

Tossa de Mar has a Roman origin. At the beginning of the 20th century, ruins of the old Roman walls were discovered inside the walled town. Ruins of houses were also discovered in other parts of the city.

The current walls date from the 12th century. There used to be five towers. Only three have been preserved: the Homage Tower, the Entrance Tower and the Jonas Tower. One of the old five towers was demolished in 1917 to construct a new lighthouse.
