29/42.- Rome, Castle
SantAngelo
Outside the Vatican I feel relieved. Now I can think again about
women and don't have the sensation I will spend my next life in hell!
On the left you see the 'Castel Sant'Angelo', constructed to hold
the grave of the emperor Adrian. It is supposed to be one of Rome's
landmarks, but from here it's not such an impressive building. The
Castle has a long and interesting history, though. It was a fortress,
and during the Renaissance, a jail. Nowadays you will find a huge
collection of military objects, and several rooms decorated with frieze
--many of them works of Perin del Vaga--, and several Renaissances
canvases and furniture.
If you visit the Castle, you should not miss the San Clemente
VII rooms with pictures by Crivelli and Signorelli. In the third floor
you will find the Pope rooms with several works of art and the Adrian
Mausoleum.
