15/50.- Paris, Parc du Champs de Mars

The best way to get to and from the 'Defense' district is by underground. Lines number one and two go there. To get to the Tour Eiffel, you have to take metro number 6 and get off at the 'Champs de Mars-Tour Eiffel' station.

The 'Champs de Mars' Park was built in the 18th century, soon after the construction of 'l’Ecole militaire' (=Military School). Since then several demonstrations took place here. 300,000 demonstrators met here to commemorate the first anniversary of the capture of the 'Bastille', in 1790. This is also the place were the 1867, 1878, 1889, 1900 and 1937 Universal Expositions took place. And here is where you find the "temporary" tower erected for the 1889 Expo ...
