One of the traditional industries in Ouessant used to be collecting seaweed.
The seaweed would be left to dry on the rocks, rinsed of its salt, and stored. It was used as manure on the fields, as fuel in the stoves, and the smaller kinds as food, in the form of salads or cakes. The Keller Island, just off the north coast, has one house. The owner never knows in advance whether he will be able to cross the sea to Ouessant or not -- it all depends on the weather. But he is never disturbed by his neighbours, and perhaps that is worth the discomfort.
