Not all inhabitatts of Ouessant live in town. There are small hamlets spread throughout the island, and small farms scattered all over. The farms are mostly made up of small plots, circled by walls which protect the crops against the raging winds. These plots are mostly tended by women. The island used to have a self-supporting economy, most of which would depend on women while the men were away at sea (as mariners more often than fishermen). As a consequence, women enjoyed an exceptional status here and it was they, rather than the men, who would propose marriage.
