In 1976, a brand new supertanker on its maiden voyage sank and broke, spilling 1100 tons of oil on the Ouessant beaches.
But not all shipwrecks were tragedies. In former times, Ouessant people would comb the beaches for wood and cargo. In 1918, a Swedish ship full of rhum from the Caribbean was attacked by a german submarine. The crew left the ship, but its precious cargo of barrels washed ashore unharmed.
