2/33.- Orleans, Campo Santo

Campo Santo used to be Orleans' main cemetery. It was used for this purpose since the 12th century. In the 15th century the arches were added. A few centuries later the number of corpses buried here had increased so much that local authorities had to close it because it had became unhealthy. Since the 18th century the place was used to hold a corn market. In the 1970's the area was refurbished, some buildings were demolished and the Visual Arts Institute was built. Since then the area is used for cultural events. Weird story, isn't it?
