10/50.- Umbria, Orvieto, Ceramic Shop

Here as elsewhere, the narrow streets are lined with shops trying to make a maximum profit during the tourist season. Shops in Orvieto specialize in colorful local ceramic, but also in Italian glass- and leatherware, food (black and white truffles abound under the oak trees in the surrounding hills, and the olive trees produce excellent olive oil as well as wood from which artists carve all kinds of decorative objects, including long-nosed Pinocchios). Oil and wine (more about which later) have been regional specialties for ages, as can be documented from archaeological and historical sites.
