35.- Glasgow, Barras Sign
What a dismal day,
and I wasn't even there on a week-end when the Barras are
open.
You'll find the
market through the arches. But all around about are
interesting shops and "traders". How about some mushy
peas? Yum yum. In actual fact, normally you can find just
about anything here from old bikes to old ladies
wandering around. The name of the market reflects the
history of trading from barrows, a fine wee business
indeed, set up by a lady with the name of Margaret
Russell. She started off her career as a lass of twelve
when she looked after a fruit barrow belonging to a
friend of her mother.
Barrowland is here
too, by the way. That's where you can jig the night away
and where many a romance has blossomed. But don't be
lulled into the picaresque romance of this part of the
city. It was here in the sixties that Bible John helped
himself to the lives of some of the ladies who frequented
Barrowland. I don't think he was ever caught either.
Jings!
