Cathédrale d'Images
The region is rich in mineral resources. The name Bauxite (from which
aluminium is made) comes from the Baux. Just below the Baux fortress, a
large stone quarry can be visited. Today, the site has been transformed
into an underground "Cathedral of Images" where paintings are projected onto
the white stone walls. In 2006, the centenary of Cézanne, the light and
sound show was entirely devoted to this painter's work. Very impressive --
more so, in fact, than viewing the original paintings themselves while
shuffling along with the crowd in a hot, stuffy museum !
