The city of Brugge used to be an active harbour town centuries ago. Now that the coastline has moved and the Zwin estuary has sanded up, Bruges lies inland, but is still connected to the sea by a canal to a large harbour, Zeebrugge. The harbour features a long jetty (here to be seen at the horizon) where gas tankers unload natural gas imported from North Africa. In 1987, the Herald of Free Enterprise, a roll-on roll-off ferry bound for England, capsized on its way out of Zeebrugge, drowning 190 people.
