41/46.- Bassin de Thau, Maguelone Basilica

The Maguelone basilica occupies a strange site on a sand-bar between the lagoon and the sea, and is difficult to reach. Maguelone was a bishopric as early as the 6th century and the stake of several battles between crusaders and infidels. The monastery offered sanctuary to several popes. After the 17th-century religious wars, the fortified monastery was destroyed, and only the basilica remained.
