17/50.- Phaistos, the granaries

Menu

The low strata of this imposing architectural complex is occupied by the granaries of the old Palace or the storerooms. Here is an old storage jar (pithoi) from the proptopalatial period. The pithoi found in the old Palace storage room were used for storing oil, wine, and wheat and a look at the Mesara plain from the site of the Phaistos Palace gives one an insight of the fertility of the place. The city and Minoan Palace is at an elevation of 100 meters above the sea level.
