Belgium used to have a colony, the Belgian Congo, and many Congolese still come to Brussels to study or settle. Many of these huddle in a quarter of town near the Porte de Namur, one of the former city gates, where they live in a gaudy community with African food and clothes shops, cafés and hairdressers.
