7/36.- Breton Church Enclosures, Guimiliau, Porz ar Maro
The monumental arch giving access to the church close is called Porz ar Maro in Breton, that is, the Door of Death, because the main gate would open to let the funeral processions bring the deceased to their last abode. The fact that the Door of Death is shaped like a Triumphal Arch is, of course, meaningful, as it suggests entry into a glorious afterlife. Through the arch (here, the one of Guimiliau) we can see the sculptured porch leading to the side entrance of the church.
