2/36.- Breton Church Enclosures, Pleyben
These church closes were enclosed spaces, within which much of the popular piety (Roman Catholicism and the cult of local saints) found its expression. The dead were buried in the sacred ground inside, where the calvary monument reminded the faithful of the passion and the resurrection of Christ. The high steeples represented the elevation of the soul to heaven, but also rose to express the town's pride and identity. Inside the churches, the stained-glass window, sculptures and other decorated church furniture (stalls, retables, chancels, organs) were so many expressions of faith, but also ways for the towns to show off their wealth.
