The original location of Bilbao was on the eastern side of the Nerbion River (Casco Viejo), and was founded by Diego Lopez in 1330. The "Casco Viejo" District used to be fortified in the Middle Ages when Bilbao was the main harbor on the northern coast of the Iberian Peninsula (Cantabrian Sea).
