11/48.-Northeast Vietnam, on the way to Cao Bang

Driving on Vietnamese roads is treacherous. It should only be attempted by people who have lived in a Southeast Asian country. There are almost no traffic rules in this country. The bigger vehicle always has preference. If there is an accident, it is almost always the driver of the bigger vehicle that has to pay. If a car crashes into a motorbike, most of the times the driver will have to pay for the bike repair. If a car crashes into a truck, the truck driver will have to pay. Usually locals do not call the police. Police is very corrupt in this country. Bribes are almost a norm.

I can only recommend traveling on a rented car with a local driver. If you are a really adventurous traveler, you can try moving around with local buses.
