The Phan Thiet area has played an important role in Vietnam's history. Phan Thiet used to be part of the ancient Cham kingdom. It was here in 1306 that King Tran Nhan Tong agreed to the marriage of King Jaya Sinhavarman III of the Cham Kingdom with princess Huyen Chan. In 1692, Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu invaded the area and incorporated it to the Nguyen Dynasty.
Two of the most prominent leaders during the revolution against the French, Tran Quy Cap and Phan Chu Trinh, lived in the Phan Thiet area.
