3/40.- Wat Mahathat, Sukhothai: Seated Buddha

Here's one of several large Buddha statutes present at Wat Mahathat. Although Sukhothai gets its share of visitors, I think it's surprisingly underappreciated. Yes, you will see the occasional tour group and a number of independent visitors, but it is not nearly as overrun with tourists as you might expect given how spectacular the site is. Most foreign visitors to Thailand visit some combination of Bangkok, the beaches of the south, or the "trekking destinations" of the north around Chiang Mai. But it seems to me that if you miss Sukhothai you are missing one of the country's best attractions, probably THE best ancient site.
