10/37.- Taipei, Zhongzheng District

The memorial sculpture on the grounds of the Park is in memory of the thousands of civilians who perished during the civil unrest that engulfed the entire island beginning on February 28, 1947 (hence 228). There is a small museum located behind the sculpture which details (though not in English) the events of 1947 and the massacre which began with an arrest of an elderly woman selling black market cigarettes in Taipei and the severe backlash it wrought on the government by disenchanted locals.
