Latakia, Ruins of Ugarit
The old Phoenician city of Ugarit was inhabited in the prehistoric times. Already 8,000 years ago a wall encircled the city. The most prosperous times were between 1450 BC and 1200 BC, when Ugarit was the main port of the region, and gave access to the Euphrates and the Tigris.
Today visitors can see the layout of the city, and walk along the ancient streets. On the site there is not much information. Hiring a guide is recommended if you want to learn more about the history of the region.
