On every boat there is a Butandings Interaction Officer and a Spotter. Once the observer sees a whale shark, everything happens very fast. The boat stops, every body gets ready, and when the BIO man shouts "jump", tourists get into the water and start swimming in the direction of the shark.
In order to snorkel with the sharks, you have to be moderately fit. This is an activity open to almost anyone; I saw little kids and old ladies.
Some sharks are shier than others, but most of the times you can swim along them for a few minutes.
Most whale sharks are between six and ten meters long (30-40 feet), but some are bigger than that! This is one of the most thrilling experiences you can have with a wild animal.
