Osaka has always been one of the commercial capitals in Japan, especially during the Edo Period. In the 1990's many international companies moved their offices to Tokyo. Some of the Japanese companies that today have their headquarters in Osaka are Matsushita (Panasonic), Sanyo, Roland and Sharp.
