Gion is famous for its teahouses (or Ochaya). Ochayas are two storey buildings made of wood. Many of the Ochayas in Gion were burnt in the fires that followed the 1864 warfare. The most famous of the Ochayas is Ichiriki Ochaya, on the corner of Shijo-dori and Hanamikoji-dori streets.
