Kyoto, Imperial Palace
Kyoto was the capital of Japan from 784, when Emperor Kanmu moved the capital from Heijo-kyo in present day Nara, till the end of the 19th century, when the capital of Japan was moved to Tokyo.
From 1331, when Emperor Kogon was enthroned, the Imperial Palace was the residence of the Imperial family. The Imperial Palace burned down several times, the current buildings date back to 1855.
