Saint Francis Church is a popular tourist attraction in Fort Kochi because it was the first Catholic church to be built in India. The church was built in 1503. Five years before, the first Portuguese arrived to India.
The building was originally a wooden church, but in 1515 its was rebuilt in stone. In 1663 the Dutch took over the city, and converted it into a Protestant church. At the end of the 18th century, with the British invasion, the church became an English Protestant Church.
