21/23.- Zhouzhuang, Wansan Pig’s Leg
If Zhouzhuang is famous for its water canals,
stone bridges and old houses, when it comes to food, what everybody
in China recognizes as typical from Zhouzhuang is the Wansan
Pig’s Leg.
The upper pig’s leg is stewed in brown
sauce over a slow fire. The meat becomes very tender. Note that
it is not as greasy as it looks. You can see in the picture
a street stall selling this local specialty.
Other typical food from Zhouzhuang are the
meat balls with three delicacies, made with wheat, mixed meat
of chicken, shrimps and minced pork, boiled in chicken soup;
and the river products, white clam and shrimps. Zhouzhuang's
Wansan brand wine and liquor should not be missed either.
