This is the South Gate to the main palace complex of Angkor Thom. It is the best preserved of the gates, and one of the most popular highlights of Angkor. According to my guide, the giant face, carved on three sides, is the face of the Khmer king although apparently scholars are not sure about that. One approaches the gate by crossing a bridge over a wide moat. The bridge is flanked by large statutes of approximately 30 Khmer warriors on each side.
