10/25.- Chichen Itza, Pyramid of Kukulcan

Menu

This is the back side of the Kukulcan Pyramid, as you can see it is only partly reconstructed.

Three astronomical phenomenons are worth seeing here. One is during the Sun Equinoxes (March 21st and September 21st), when the afternoon sun projects a snake on the North stairway of the pyramid. The same phenomenon can be seen during the lunar Equinoxes. During the summer solstice (June 20th-22nd), at dawn one can see how the sun illuminates the North and East Facades of the building, while the South and West ones are completely dark. During the winter solstice (December 20th-22nd), the South and West facade are illuminated.
