All the cultures that have influenced Jamaica's history are present in its cuisine. You can know a lot about Jamaica's past by looking at what they eat. There are arawak, Spanish, English, African, Indian and Chinese ingredients in most of the island's typical dishes.

Jamaica's national dish is achee and saltfish, but there are many other dishes, like the jerked pork, chicken and fish. Jerk meat is marinated for hours and then cooked over a pit with pimento wood. You find jerk stands all over the island.

If you want to taste the local fast food, look for a baker shop and buy a patty. There are vegetable and meat patties. For a few Jamaican dollars your appetite will be satisfied.
