9/50.- Saint Ann's bay, old woman

This picture was shot in a street in Saint Ann's. This old town, 7 miles west of Ocho Rios, was where Christopher Columbus landed in his second travel to the Americas back in 1494. Not far from here, Columbus had to spend one year when his ships were eaten up by worms in his fourth and final voyage.

A few years later, in 1509, the Spaniards founded the first town in Jamaica, Sevillla la Nueva (New Seville). This town was named after the city of Seville, in Spain. History would demonstrate that this was not the best part of the island to settle. 40 years later Spaniards abandoned the town. It was too unhealthy for the "tough" Europeans.
