Another recommended one-day excursion is a tour of the Bogue Lagoon. Only three islands remain of the old mangrove system south of Montego Bay. The mangroves are vital for the survival of the tropical reefs. They used to be harvested by locals, but tourism development plans almost destroyed them some years ago. Currently the area is protected.
You can rent a canoe and tour the lagoon with a guide. Pelicans, herons, egret, and other tropical birds can be spotted. The lake underwater life is quite rich too.
