26.- Fort Lauderdale, Airboat

The airboat was invented to push a boat over shallow water. The Everglades is sometimes just two feet deep and there are weeds in the water that could catch a propeller. So this large fan pulls air through the back of the boat and (despite the loud noise) gives you a fun ride over the River of Grass. I recommend that we visit the tour in the late afternoon, so we can watch the sunset on the Everglades after we take the tour of the animal camp (yes, you can see an alligator and stroke a non-poisonous snake). There are two "camps" to experience, one near the Sawgrass Mills Mall and the second near Griffin Road. Both are fun and they are located on Route.
