23.- Everglades, Front
view of the airboat
The route ahead is
deeper than the flat grass on the left. The grass
stretches to the horizon. The name "glade" means a flat
place between trees in the forest. Well, here in the flat
land of South Florida, there is almost no forest, just
grass ; it goes "forever." The "River of Grass" is
another name for the Everglades, since the water flows
from the north to the south in a "river" that is about 80
km wide. Large pipes under the two major roads
(Interstate 75 and State Road 41) that cross the
everglades allow the water to cross under the roads.
There are other pipes for animals (and cameras in the
pipes take video pictures of panthers, foxes, deer and
other wildlife).
