After being taken over by the Dutch, then the Danish, in 1917 Saint Thomas, along with Saint John and Saint Croix, was purchased by the U.S. for $25 million; one way to maintain control over the Caribbean during the First World War. Today, the control of Saint Thomas is now in the hands of the tourists, the cruise lines, and the ever present salesmen.
