31/40.- São Paulo, Theatro Municipal

From downtown, you can get to the Municipal Theater, by walking along Avenue São Joao and then turning left. This theater is one of the most emblematic buildings in town.

The building was designed by Ramos de Azevedo, with the help of two Italian architects, at the beginning of the 20th century. Some of the best international artists have performed here. To name just a few: Maria Callas, Enrico Caruso, and Nureyev. Nowadays the Municipal Theater hosts a dance and music school, and plays a major role in São Paulo's cultural scene.
