9/46.- Salvador da Bahia, Terreiro de Jesus

Terreiro de Jesus is one of the most beautiful squares in Salvador. In the center of the square there is a fountain, in front of which Capoiera demonstrations take place throughout the day. Young locals meet here and practice this traditional Bahian dance-fight, all they ask for is some reals in exchange for pictures.

Capoeira is a dance with African origins, that slaves practiced in plantations. They invented this dance, because they were not allowed to fight. Slaves adapted their fights to the rhythm of music, and Capoeira was born. Expert Capoeira dancers are extremely fit. Flexibility and elasticity are a must. In the square you will also find local women who do African braids for foreign tourists.
