At the end of the promenade in Copacabana there is a street market where you can buy souvenirs: T-shirts, flip flops, caps, sunglasses, etc. Prices are rather fixed, and bargaining seems not to be an option. In this market you can also find the kind of clothes people wear in the famous Escala Gay Ball.

If you are in Rio during Carnival, you may want to go to the Gay Ball. The Gay Ball takes place on Tuesday night (Mardi Gras). This is a party for transvestites and gays, but anyone with an open mind can join in and have fun. Wearing a (gay) fancy dress is almost mandatory. The party starts around 23h, and ends after 6 am. After the party you can join the locals who go to the beach to see the sun rise. The party takes place in Escala, a club in the district of Leblon. To get there, and back, the best option is a taxi.
