26/37.- Ngorongoro, Hyena

One of my favorite animals. We learned (correctly) on this safari that hyenas are not just scavengers, though heaven knows there is nothing wrong with scavengers. Note the dung beetle, upon which the entire ecosystem of Africa depends. No, hyenas are also predators, and can fight just as well to protect their kill as they can when they try to steal someone else's. Their bark is an eerie and instantly recognizable sound in the night.
