Over 80% of
wildebeest (gnu) babies, even those in very large herds,
are dropped by their moms within two weeks of each other.
The flood of newborns ensures a greater proportion will
survive the first few weeks of infancy. After the lions
and other predators have snatched enough baby gnus to
satisfy their hunger and need to feed their own young,
the rest are more likely to grow to adulthood. In fact,
adult wild herd animals are numerous for the same reason,
survival of the fittest.
